Space Center Houston 01 - Lunar Rover Trainer

A few weeks back Eileen and I took a little weekend getaway to Space Center Houston.  It was really a place I wanted to go to for a long time.  I went to Johnson Space Center in like 1991 and it turns out I went there just before the museum portion known as "Space Center Houston" opened.  I remember that when I went, I really didn't see much, just a gift shop for the most part.  I gotta admit, this trip wasn't much better.

I thought there would be more to this place than there really was.  One of the big disappointments was seeing the "Mission Control Center".  We had to get on a tram that ran only once every half an hour and we had to wait thru three of them before we got on.  Then, when we got there, SCH is in the process of restoring the mission control center back to its Apollo-mission configuration.  So, there were ladders and tarps and other construction things in there. They didn't even advise visitors about that!  It would have been nice to know so we could've spent valuable time elsewhere. Not worth the visit.  And also, it's disappointing that they are restoring it because they are removing all of the cigarette stains and other signs of wear and use to make it pristine.  Would kind of like them to just leave it as it was when it was shutdown.

There were some interesting things to see there, so it wasn't a total bust. The picture you see here is from the "Starship Gallery" and is a shot of the Lunar Rover Trainer.  You can read more about it here.  Some of the text from the link to the site is as follows:

Rovers were taken to the moon’s surface (and left there) on the last three Apollo missions. Astronauts Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, John Young, Charlie Duke, Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt all practiced on the Lunar Rover trainer displayed at Space Center Houston in preparation for those missions.

I hope you enjoy the photo and thanks for dropping by.
