The last few ski trips I've been on, I've stopped by the ski patrol shacks on the mountain to buy a t-shirt. The money goes to worthy cause and they are usually pretty cool shirts. You see "ski patrollers" are the ones who make sure skiing is safe for everyone. They are like the "lifeguards of the slopes". They do everything from making sure people aren't skiing too aggressively, help injured skiers and manage the snow. Safety is their business! When I mean manage the snow, they will perform controlled avalanches to make sure people don't get trapped in one. They do this multiple ways; they use dynamite, mortars and even a howitzer! I went up a lift with a patroller and he said that controlling avalanches is huge fun. I bet! Except when a mortar or howitzer shell doesn't go off. Then it's a royal pain.
This one of two shacks that I saw in Telluride. I didn't stop in this one to look at the shirts, but I did stop to take this photo. I'm not sure if the gentleman in this picture was a "ski patroller" since he wasn't wearing the traditional red and black jacket with the white cross that says "ski patrol" inside of it, but it was nice of him to turn and smile for me! Oh, I didn't buy a t-shirt either. I had already bought too many from town. Maybe next time! Click here for more info on the Telluride ski patrol.
I hope you enjoy the photo and thanks for dropping by.
